Chronicles V – SA People in Maputo

I am hating the construction business and disliking my cousin more every day. I am treated like a skivvy at his house. He and Jay have off road bikes, and on weekends they load them on a bakkie, then I have to take them out into the open country and drive back home. Each time Jay says, “Now you go straight home Wayne.” Guess who gets to wash the bikes when they get back? I do this and they go to the pubs that are frequented with South African people, mainly in construction and trucking business. I am embarrassed to be a South African because of the type of people they are. Seems they live in the past, apartheid era. All hate blacks in general and say bad things about the Mozambicans. They all have grown wealthier here than they could in South Africa. My cousin is a good example, his construction company in South Africa was a failure, and he could not cut the mustard, so moved to Mozambique. Here I see and hear from Vaughn’s friends it was easy to exploit both the government and the laborers and become fairly wealthy. They brag about how the exploit the Mozambique people and complain about the new laws the government has implicated to curb them. I would rather wash dirt bikes that associate or even be seen with these people. My cousin’s workers have commented on the fact that I am not like the other South Africans. I tell them not all South Africans are like the lot they see. Those are the ones we did not want so they came to Mozambique. Never a truer word than spoken in jest.

The Chronicles V – Mozambique Taxi

The visa system in Mozambique works like this. You get a visa at the border but it lasts only one month. To get another months visa one has to leave and then re-enter Mozambique. This is a pain in the arse, but expired visas? Vaughn told me that you get huge fines if your visa is note up to date, he normally takes his South African people to the border, but tells his cousin, me, that I must catch a taxi. I get the company personnel officer, Gustavo, to take me to the taxi ranks; it is opposite a very South African like mall. The border is not that far, about 80km away. The cost is 60 Metica. (R20.00.) I squeeze in to the mini bus, a huge mamma is sitting almost on top of me. I am in the row just behind the driver and notice he has no fuel; I am a bit paranoid about this type of thing. Finally when we have squeezed in more people than you would believe possible, we set off. Only to travel a short distance, then we stop, a woman passenger starts yelling at some people, jumps out and gets into what looks like an argument. She returned to the vehicle and we were off again. Barreling along at 120km an hour in a totally un-roadworthy, over crowded mini bus, I got to wondering if this is how I will finally get killed.

Chronicles V – The Clinic Final

Must be the worst fumbling job I have ever seen with a needle and syringe follows. She also wants to start sewing immediately. Again I get Ziggy to tell her to wait a few moments for the bloody stuff to work. He translates. She seems grateful for the advice. It got worse. The poor untrained girl, and Ziggy, suffers through putting in three of the 5 needed stitches, she has never done this before, of  that, I am sure. Even with the injection, Ziggy stops her from trying to do the last two. I help her bandage the wound. It cost 10 Metica. (R3.00.)  We get back on site and Vaughn does not even come to see if Ziggy is ok. Jay takes the keys and says we better finish the roof on time. I have no time for my cousin and his wife, maybe even before this incident but definitely after.

The Chronicles V – The Clinic 2

We get to the front and go into the consulting room with a sister, the doctor is in the other one. Problem is this sister is very young and she is very nervous. She is a black lady so hard to see if she went pale as she undressed my crude dressing, but her hands started shaking. The consulting room consists of a bunk covered with foam, no clean sheet of paper or clothe, the wall that it is up against has all sorts of stains I do not want to think about. Ziggy does not go that way, he is lead to a small three legged stool, a dirt bin half full of other stained stuff I also don’t want to think about is put under his hand. He is dripping blood. Next to the stool is a table with the usual patch up tools, except no sterilizing basin, no hot water even. This is bad. The very nervous, young sister, threads a curved needle, I know these things. I have seen the local anasetic bottles and syringes but she proceeds to push the needle through the skin. Ziggy is moaning in pain, and definitely a shade or two lighter that his usual colour. I tell Ziggy to ask her for an injection first! He translates, the poor girl forgot!

The Chronicles V – The Clinic Part 1

Vaughn is now shouting and swearing at us and we are making even more mistakes. Worse we are getting careless in our haste, even by my reckless standards. Ziggy and I are doing the roof with paper thin corrugated iron, the wind is howling and the sheets are being flung around. Vaughn is not interested, just get the job done. The inevitable happens. Ziggy get hurt, the wind blew a sheet off the roof and he grabbed for it, it sliced his thumb to the bone. There was a lot of blood. I got the first aid kit out and put a pressure bandage on. He needed more than my basic first aid skills. I asked where the hospital was. I found out Mozal runs a clinic a few short kilometers up the road. I tell Ziggy to hang in there and I will go and get a bakkies keys from Jay or Vaughn. I tell them what happened and Vaughn is pissed off, he does not give a damn about his worker that is hurt, he actually refuses to give me the keys. He reckons Ziggy should just carry on working.
I get pissed off. Always a bad thing, I tell him off and just take the keys, collect Ziggy and head out. The clinic is not bad looking, a surprise. It consists of a small building with two consulting rooms. It has a neat garden and a long waiting bench under a veranda. It costs 1 Metica to join the queue. (R0.30.)

Chronicles V – Unacceptable Behavior

One day Vaughn tells Ziggy and I we have to fix up a much rusted shipping container as an office for the visiting Mozal people. The roof and floor are rusted through and we have to cut them out and build new ones. The floor is to be concrete and the new roof corrugated iron. Now both Ziggy and I have never done anything like this before and Vaughn gives a ridiculous deadline. When Vaughn walks on site his staff is very nervous, any that can, split. He shouts and screams, throws childish tantrums and has hit people before. As the Mozambique government does not take kindly to this, apparently he has been in trouble about this behavior more than once before. So far he has not shouted at me, just looks at me like I am a piece of shit. Ironically he and Jay have started drinking again and I see the alcoholic pattern emerging, I am after all an expert at this business, by association and practice. They drink just a little more each day. Then the fights start, mainly because of Vaughn’s problems with Kirsten. He feels Jay is too soft on him. One night Vaughn trashed the whole house in a drunken rage. The anger was directed at Kirsten, whom he regards as a “moffie”, and a mommy’s boy. I flew under the radar, also because of personal experience with people like this; and the next morning Vaughn gave the classic alkies remorse speech. I had not had a drink since entering The Ark, at this stage, but I could hear the evil bastard calling me. Now Ziggy and I have to put up with a still pissed from the night before boss. We try our best but we are just not up to this job, first we nearly kill each other with the huge angle grinders then we fuck up the cement floor, it was, just , a little bit…… unlevel.

The Chronicles V – Safety Rules

All over the suburb are little chemists, Farmácia, they sell Grandpa Headache Powders! A box of 38 in South Africa was around R25.00, here they are 380 Metica. That is R126! Shit it is cheaper to drink. Local beer is 20 Metica a Quart, in the Shebeen. R6.60. the booze in this country is cheap and well known brands are 1/10^th of the price in my country but. I hear stories about the Johnny Walker Black Label one gets at local shops, very cheap, looks exactly like the real thing, and then you taste it. Also hard drinking guys pass out after half a bottle. Must be medicinal alcohol mixed in with it. If one wants decent booze the Checkers here has a full selection, imported from South Africa. 10 times the price though. At this stage I was on the wagon, so it made no difference to me.
The next few weeks I worked every day on the construction sites, I learned more about bloody cement than I ever wanted to know. I got even fitter that I was from all the wood chopping at The Ark.  I made friends with all the workmen and with Ziggy in particular. I learned all the safety rules from Penganie and drove him nuts by breaking them. Wear safety gloves to paint, for God sake! Huge sheets of paper have to be filled in before any job can proceed, even a small job like changing an oil filter. One has to list all the possible accidents that MAY happen. This could take hours and meanwhile the work just sits. The amusing part is what the chaps came up with, hell they should be writing stories!
